IBM joined forces with Pace University to help students enhance information technology skills by organizing a series of technology seminars, sponsor faculty education workshops and arrange for IBM (News - Alert) professionals to mentor students and provide career advice. IBM will also take students for visit to its laboratories in Poughkeepsie, Yorktown Heights and Hawthorne, New York.

The Empire State Development and the New York State Department of Labor revealed that there are 40,000 IT jobs available in New York today. IBM claims that this program is designed to help students prepare for this booming job market and encourage innovation in the local economy.

According to the IBM press release, a recent IBM survey of over 400 CEOs worldwide has found that almost 75 percent cited deficits in their employees' job skills as the biggest hurdle to overcome was growth and innovation. Thanks to the lack of qualified IT skills in the marketplace, employers are finding it extremely difficult to fulfill technology jobs.

Dean Susan Merritt, Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems at Pace University said that the collaboration will help students build the relevant skills they need to support this effort.

IBM has collaborated with approximately 2,000 universities and 11,000 faculty members to build technology skills on open source and open standards technologies.

Gina Poole, vice president, Innovation and University Relations, IBM said, "As the number of IT jobs continues to rise in the United States, it is critical for corporations and universities to team together to accelerate the pace at which skills are developed and new talent enters the job market."
