Microsoft And Citrix Team Up To Introduce Branch Office Appliance

TMCnet Contributing Editor

Microsoft Corp. and Citrix Systems, Inc. have teamed up to design and market a new multifunction Citrix branch office appliance based on the Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows Server operating system and Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server. The appliance will also make use of the Citrix WANScaler solution.

According to a Microsoft press release, both Microsoft and Citrix have plans to come up with the branch office appliance that can integrate advanced wide area network (WAN) optimization technologies into consolidated branch office services. The multifunction appliance will also be remotely manageable.

Microsoft hopes that the multifunction Citrix branch office appliance will be able to solve common problems for customers when it comes to traditional networking solutions or individual point products.

Ted Kummert, corporate vice president of the Security, Access and Solutions Division at Microsoft says that Citrix’s technology and market success in application networking will complement their know-how and leadership in server technologies and core networking services.

Mark Templeton, president and CEO of Citrix also commented on their commitment to “pursuing strategic opportunities that help customers deliver any type of application to any user with the highest level of performance and security and the lowest possible cost.” Templeton views the collaboration as “a unique opportunity to address the needs of enterprise branch offices in a way few other companies can.”

In growing mobility among branch office and remote workers, both the companies are able to join forces for designing the branch office appliance. This necessity was especially felt after a Citrix research revealed that a projected 55 percent of enterprise employees today access all of their business applications from remote office locations.
