AT&T Offers Reward to Catch Phone Cable Thieves in Texas
TMCnet Contributing Editor
Copper telephone cable seems to have become so expensive in Texas that people are literally stealing it, and the problem has now become a very serious one. Indeed, AT&T's Texas division found itself so affected by the thefts that it is getting seriously involved in trying to find a solution.
The telecom giant announced it will offer a $3,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the thefts that have recently occurred for AT&T ( News - Alert) copper telephone cables in the Edinburg, McAllen and Brownsville areas of the Lone Star State.
In its thieves' quest, AT&T Texas will hand out fliers to local pawn shops, scrap metal companies and law enforcement agencies. The flier lists the dates and locations where thefts of AT&T copper telephone cables have occurred. In its announcement, the telecom urges anyone with information to call (800) 807-4205 to begin the investigation process and possibly claim their $3,000 reward.
In each of the cases, the damages to the lines exceeded $1,500 which, according to the Texas Penal Code, is a felony punishable by jail time and fines.
"AT&T is taking this matter very seriously," said AT&T spokesperson April Borlinghaus in a statement. "We are working with law enforcement personnel to ensure that those responsible for the crimes are apprehended and punished. We feel that the reward will motivate people with information to come forward."
