Hackers Steal Credit Card Info from AT&T Online Store
TMCnet Contributing Editor
Several thousand AT&T online store customers got their credit card information stolen over the weekend. The hackers also got away with personal data from those customers who purchased DSL equipment through the telecom giant's Web store.
According to AT&T ( News - Alert), its online store was shut down just hours after the hack occurred. The telecom notified the major credit card companies whose customer accounts were involved.
"We recognize that there is an active market for illegally obtained personal information. We are committed to both protecting our customers' privacy and to weeding out and punishing the violators," said AT&T's chief privacy officer Priscilla Hill-Ardoin in a statement. "We deeply regret this incident and we intend to pay for credit monitoring services for customers whose accounts have been impacted. We will work closely with law enforcement to bring these data thieves to account."
AT&T has already notified about 19,000 customers of the security breach by e-mail, phone and regular mail. The telecom announced that it will pay for credit monitoring services to assist in protecting the customers involved.
The new, two-year contract calls for AT&T to provide L&T with a complete suite of voice and data communications services bundled into a single contract and a single bill. The initial service suite includes local and long distance, data and IP.
