IBM Introduces DB2 9-powered Dynamic Data Warehouse

TMCnet Contributing Editor

In a bid to help customers quickly and easily gain greater insight into their business information, IBM has unveiled a data warehousing platform built upon its industry-leading DB2 9 “Viper” data server.

The DB2 Data Warehouse 9 is equipped with IBM’s (News - Alert) patented pureXML technology helping customers store and use data in an XML format. XML acts as the standard data interchange format between disparate applications, businesses and domains. The format comes with DB2 9 “venom,” technology that compresses row data to decrease storage requirements, enhance I/O efficiency and offer quicker data access from the disk.

DB2 9, which was introduced about two months ago, is considered to be one of the company’s most significant data server technology advancements in more than two decades.

“Our customers are telling us that DB2 9 has ushered in a new era of data server technology that helps them to grow their businesses,” says Arvind Krishna, vice president IBM data servers, in a press release. “By extending these features into DB2 Data Warehouse 9 we have again raised the bar and delivered the industry’s most advanced dynamic warehousing platform.”

DB2 Data Warehouse is capable of transforming mixed workloads that span the largest multi-user transactional systems into the largest pure analytical workloads involving massive multi-billion row tables. Add to that development and management tools for rapid and efficient delivery and administration of warehouses.

IBM claims that DB2 9 delivers 3-way partitioning including leading multidimensional clustering, cube definitions, transformation modules and data flow diagrams.

Organizations like American Electric Power, Central Michigan University, Farmers Insurance, Teleglobe and Cardinal Health have already started using DB2 9.
