XO Communications (News - Alert) just scored a new, five-year contract from the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County (Metro) to provide metro dark fiber services.

The new contract calls for XO to create a high-speed data network which will connect twenty-two major government administration buildings, including emergency response, police, fire, and other city services. The company is already the owner and operator of a large fiber network in Nashville, which spans more than 450 route miles across that metro area.

“With the scale of this project, XO was the only provider that could meet our needs in terms of network infrastructure, support and technology expertise,” said Sandy Cole, director of IT services for the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, in a statement released on Wednesday. “With the support of XO, this advanced communications network will help the Metro Information Technology Services Department achieve their strategic vision to provide information, communication and business solutions to the departments and agencies of the Metropolitan Government so that they can achieve their business objectives and exceed the expectations of the citizens we all serve.”

XO had recently completed its new nationwide inter-city fiber optic network and is now carrying customer traffic across additional routes. The company’s new nationwide inter-city network spans 18,000 route miles connecting 75 major metropolitan markets across the United States including Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Colorado Springs, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Memphis, Miami, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Nashville, New Orleans, New York, Omaha, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland, Raleigh, Sacramento, St. Louis, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Tampa and Washington, DC.
