HSBC Spreads Its Wings in Philippines

Report by Anuradha Shukla

To meet its burgeoning business outsourcing operations, the UK-based HSBC has begun its hunt for a suitable place to open another BPO unit. Talks are on with Ortigas & Co. Ltd, prospective property developers of the site in Philippines. to open a unit at the Ortigas Center.

Ortigas Center is the second most important commercial and business hub in Philippines. The hub located at the boundary of Pasig city, Manduluyong city and Qquezon city, is the home for many swanky shopping malls, magnificent skyscrapers, dazzling nightlife clubs and eating joints. Hundreds of companies are running their operations in the business district and thousands of workers commute to this place everyday.

This new set up will be HSBC’s fourth site in the country, working as an extension of its glitzy five-story structure operating in Northgate Cyber zone in Alabang and in PbCom tower in Makati city. These two buildings are successfully handling customer care calls and work as a collection center for HSBC’s customer base in the US.

Mr. Rex Drilon, Chief Operating Officer of Ortigas & Co., shows his willingness in financing a build-to-suit facility for HSBC, which holds some stake in his organization. "They are looking at Ortigas as center for expansion. We have been talking except that we don’t have ready structure for them. We are trying to have them locate in Frontera Verde," he remarks.

Bounded by Julia Vargas and Ortigas Avenues, Frontera Verde is a nineteen-hectare mixed-use commercial development center by Ortigas & Co. It is this place where George T.Yang of Alliance Global Group and property developer MC Mall, Inc have decided to erect a four building information and technology, auto and wellness center. Out of these four, two buildings are partly designed for call center and BPO firms.

HSBC offers one of the largest banking operations in the world with its head office located in the HSBC tower London Docklands. In terms of assets it sits proudly on the third place. Seventy percent of its earnings come from outside U.K. For the bank’s domestic BPO needs HSBC is developing its third facility inside the Bonifacie Global city in Taguig. With a sprawling area of 15,000 square meters and a total of nine floors, the project will finish in the first quarter of next year.
