Hand Held Products Launches New Ruggedized DPM Readers for Emerging Market

TMCnet Communications and Broadband Columnist

Hand Held Products, a provider of data collection systems, has launched the 6308 DPM Reader and 6328 Cordless DPM Reader for the emerging direct part mark (DPM) identification market. Powered by Adaptus™ Imaging Technology 5.0, both devices are designed to provide high performance DPM reading.

Direct part marking allows manufacturers to ensure quality over production processes through the direct marking of parts with codes that are machine-readable. Parts can then be tracked through their life cycle.

Customers in the automotive, aerospace, electronics, healthcare and defense industries who require uncompromising data accuracy in their part traceability, authenticity and supply chain management are the target market for these devices.

According to Larry Ramsey-Macomber, DPM product manager for Hand Held Products, the 6308 and the 6328 were developed specifically to meet the DPM reading requirements that exist in today’s industrial marketplace. The specialized illumination, optics and decoding software coordinate to provide consistent, world-class performance on all DPM, regardless of the marking method or mark contrast.

Ramsey-Macomber added that the ruggedized housing and IP52 sealed construction will withstand the harshest working conditions. Such a characteristic better positions the DPM readers for the specified markets.

Hand Held partnered with Cognex Corporation, a global provider of machine vision technology, for device development. Don Flynn, VP of Business Development for Hand Held Products attributes the partnership as setting the standard for what the market is referring to as a Class A DPM handheld reading product. The leveraging of each company’s unique expertise enabled the companies to deliver a product that provides true no excuses DPM reading performance and device durability.

Both the 6308 DPM Reader and the 6328 Cordless DPM Reader possess impact resistant housing that is designed to withstand up to 50 drops to concrete from 2 meters. The 6308 supports USB, keyboard wedge and RS232 communications. The 6328 features Bluetooth v1.2 wireless connectivity.

Hand Held Products is a global manufacturer of image based data collection systems for mobile, wireless and transaction processing solutions with headquarters located in Central New York. The company is privately held and has representation in every major market and geographic region of the world.

Cognex Corporation designs, develops, manufacturers and markets machine vision systems. In plain language: computers that can ‘see’. Cognex’s machine vision sensors gauge, guide, inspect, count and identify products on the fastest production lines.

As manufacturers continue to streamline processes in the supply chain, the demand will grow for products like the 6308 DPM Reader and the 6328 Cordless DPM Reader. Ideally, the integration of this technology should lessen shrinkage through better inventory management and other processes in the manufacturing of products in the target markets. Whether or not a cost savings can be passed along to the customers may not be realized, but shareholders are sure to see the difference.
