This week, the VoIP Minute Watch covers news from Ascom, Avaya (News - Alert), EarthLink, Arcor, Acme Packet, Tekelec and Vozin Communications.

Wireless communications provider Ascom announced Wednesday that it has been selected by Avaya to join the company's DeveloperConnection program.

Ascom is the developer of the FreeNET VoWiFi System for voice over WiFi, i75 wireless handsets and UNITE Messaging Suite, a family of applications that deliver messages, alerts and data from any information system directly to on-site handsets, wide-area pagers, cell phones, PDAs and Blackberry devices.

With the compatibility of Ascom's wireless handsets with SIP-enabled Avaya IP telephony solutions, now businesses can deploy on-site wireless capabilities that allow a mobile workforce to stay in constant contact with internal colleagues and external customers.

EarthLink announced Thursday that it has renewed its contract with 3PV for third-party verification services for the Internet Service Provider’s VoIP-based calling service voice products trueVoice and Home Phone Service.

The contract renewal calls for 3PV to continue assisting expediting the order process required to transfer a customer’s voice service from another provider to EarthLink. The company will also inform customers about EarthLink’s E911 service capabilities.

Also on Thursday, German wireline operator Arcor opted to deploy Acme Packet’s Net-Net session border controllers (SBCs) in a move to adopt Italtel's Next Generation Networks (NGN) architecture. The architecture will be used to create a Class 4 VoIP system, which will expand the company’s transit network and a Class 5 system. This will enable the company to develop new IP telephony and multimedia services for its residential and business customers.

With Net-Net SBCs' in place, Arcor will be able to support both it’s interconnect and access border requirements for VoIP and other IP interactive communications. Arcor will also be able to integrate application servers to launch enterprise services via Class 4 SIP-trunking. The company has deployed the Net-Net SBCs in seven points-of-presence (PoPs) in high-availability (HA) configurations.

Switching equipment manufacturer Tekelec announced Thursday that it has been chosen to provide Israel-based Pelephone Communications with its EAGLE 5 platform for integrated number portability (NP). Pelephone is a code division multiple access (CDMA) third-generation (3G) wireless network technology operator.

For this project, Tekelec (News - Alert) joined forces with Bynet Data Communications, a systems integrator. Bynet will implement the service and provide local project management and other services in voice signaling and data IP infrastructure to Pelephone.

On Friday, Vozin Communications announced that its TalQer service was launched as an alternative to SkypeOut and SkypeIn for Skype users. The service was first launched as a plug-in which enabled PC-to-Phone services for Google (News - Alert) Talk users.

Skypers will be able to add-on a new TalQer dial button to the client's interface which can be used to call Skype (News - Alert) Contacts and Skype History entries. TalQer also introduced a suite of new services comprised of a free random TalqIn phone numbers with free voicemail for every customer.
