Wireless access and VoIP systems provider Airspan Networks (News - Alert) just announced that it scored a service contract reportedly valued at $2.3 million from Yozan Japan. The move follows the completion of a network optimization program for Yozan—the company continues the rollout and optimization of such.

The new contract calls for Airspan to provide both additional network optimization consulting and support services through to the end of April. The service agreement will also include WiMAX systems consulting, project management, radio planning services, training, and engineering support for Yozan’s site selection and preparation.

“Yozan has been very pleased with the performance of the equipment since the optimization that took place in the third quarter 2006,” said Yozan’s president Kiyoshi Ohata in a statement released on Thursday. “The new agreement will help us to deploy Airspan’s equipment according to the best practices of the broadband wireless industry. Airspan has had considerable experience in deploying WiMAX networks elsewhere, and its knowledge of operators’ practices will be very valuable to Yozan as it continues to deploy services in Tokyo.”

Airspan made news last month when it joined forces with BEC Telecom S.A. (BEC-TEL), a local carrier in the Dominican Republic to announced that the companies had completed the deployment of a large scale rural connectivity network under the Dominican Republic’s Rural Public Telephony Phase II Project and the initiation of commercial operations.

Users of the new network will be able to make and receive local, national and international calls using a network based on fixed and mobile wireless technologies that also provide Internet access and VoIP-based services. Townships in the provinces of La Altagracia, Hato Mayor, María Trinidad Senchez, Monsenor Nouel, Monte Cristi, Peravia, Valverde, La Vega, San Cristobal, San Jose de Ocoa, Santiago and Santo Domingo are currently being served through the project.
