AOL (News - Alert) has appointed Ted Cahall, an Internet industry veteran, to the post of executive vice president of the company’s Platforms division.

Via his new post, Cahall will oversee AOL Search, e-commerce, publishing platform and tools, the MapQuest service and other local-based services, including Relegence, which AOL recently acquired.

Cahall will now report to Ron Grant, president and COO of AOL. In this newly created position, the executive will be based in Dulles, Virginia.

“We are delighted to have a seasoned business and technology executive on board to manage these important AOL platforms,” commented Grant about Cahall’s appointment.

Grant added: “Ted has a wealth of experience that will help us continue to improve our search, e-commerce and local offerings, extend our lead in online mapping services, and put real-time information in the hands of end users moments after it is published.”

The Platforms business unit was reportedly put together to provide users with the tools and content needed to efficiently use the Web, and “increase communication and information sharing among these consumer-focused lines of business.”

“This is an exciting time to be joining AOL, as it successfully moves forward on its new Web-strategy,” said Cahall in a statement. “I am looking forward to working with the talented teams that are innovating and improving the quality and performance of our key content and consumer-based platforms.”

Prior to joining the AOL, Cahall served as executive vice president and COO of Classmates.com, a community-based networking company. Via this position, he directed operations of the Web site. He also worked at CNET Networks.

Cahall began his career at AT&T (News - Alert) Bell Laboratories, where he received a U.S. patent for systems performance analysis.
