Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) launched three media chips at the 3GSM (News - Alert) World Congress.

The three new mobile chips were named AMD Imageon 2192, 2294, and 2298 media processors. They are designed for high-resolution image processing, high-definition audio, and DVD-quality video for an enhanced multimedia experience. These new mobile chips are expected to aid handheld manufacturers to deliver cost-effective multimedia features that are currently in demand.

According to published reports, these next-generation processors offer a combination of features that bring a high quality, seamless, multi-tasking entertainment experience to mobile users. These new chips are expected to break new ground and introduce new standards of mobile communication and multimedia with image stabilization, DVD-quality video, color-rich TV output display, and high-resolution imaging.

AMD product manager Philippe Decotignie was quoted as saying, “The new media chips will support full DVD resolutions or "five times what was available in earlier generations, consumers can turn their phones into camcoders and mobile TVs with a very high, very fast resolution"

AMD mobile chips are currently being tested by handheld manufacturers to determine their compatibility with selected mobile units.
