Armenian Datacom Expands Offering via Converged Alcatel-Lucent IP/MPLS Backbone TMCnet Contributing Editor Armenian Datacom will now be able to deliver an expanded suite of services to its business and residential customers including data and Internet services via an IP/MPLS
 network supplied by Alcatel (News - Alert)-Lucent.Alcatel-Lucent’s new IP/MPLS network will cover most of the Armenian capital city of Yerevan in Armenia. When the network is deployed, Armenian Datacom will be able to provide high speed Internet (HSI) and virtual private LAN
services (VPLS) for corporate customers. The operator will be able to run all services on a single IP infrastructure.“By leveraging Alcatel-Lucent’s IP
portfolio of products, Armenian Datacom Company can offer advanced business and residential services for the first time in Armenia,” commented Armenian Datacom's CEO, Harald Grytten, in a statement released on Wednesday. Grytten continued: “Implementing Alcatel-Lucent's leading-edge solutions gives us the business and technology tools we need to compete and to offer subscribers a variety of converged services.”
Today's news comes on the heels of Alcatel-Lucent's recent announcement about being picked by T-Mobile (the mobile business arm of Deutsche Telekom (News - Alert)) to enhance its GSM
network with GSM/EDGE technology in order to increase its speed. EDGE technology reportedly enables data rates of up to 220 kbit/s. The move will enable the mobile operator to offer its German subscribers with more advanced multimedia services and expand the availability of its "Web'n'Walk" mobile Internet service.Alcatel-Lucent expects the GSM/EDGE network to be upgraded and operational by the end of this year. Alcatel-Lucent has agreed to replace thousands of existing GSM base stations in T-Mobile's (News - Alert) network with it’s latest 9100 Multi-standard Base Station
product line.
