AT&T (News - Alert) has named Bob Irwin to the post of new president and CEO of Sterling Commerce, one of the telecom’s subsidiaries. Irwin had been president and CEO interim of the Columbus, Ohio-based provider of business processes following the passing of former CEO Samuel Starr in late 2006.

Irwin has been part of Sterling’s sales team since he joined the company in 2002. Prior to serving as president, Irwin was senior vice president, America’s sales. Via this role, Irwin led the Sterling Commerce (America)’s sales team and helped reorganize the company’s sales efforts.

“I am proud to take on this role as we continue to focus on helping our customers establish business without borders,” commented Irwin. “In today’s global economy, Sterling is uniquely positioned to help businesses operate effectively, in real time, across boundaries of space, size and technology. With the backing of a global technology leader like AT&T and a service-oriented approach, I am confident that Sterling will reach new heights.”

According to AT&T’s announcement, Irwin has more than two decades of experience in the technology industry through work at IBM (News - Alert), several consulting firms and as an information technology (IT) executive. The executive received his bachelor of science degree from Ohio State University in 1982.
