IT Departments Shift from Tactical to Strategic

TMCnet Assistant Editor

In today's constantly changing business world, IT departments are now playing an important part in the success of a business.

No longer are IT departments the independent, unrecognized element of a business they were. In fact, now more than ever, their importance is on the rise as technology is increasingly used to bring benefits like reduced costs, flexibility, support for mobile workforces and can quickly adapt to changing market needs.

An Oracle (News - Alert) whitepaper titled, "Transforming IT Through Convergence, Alignment and Good Governance," featured in the TMCnet Whitepaper Library, highlights factors reshaping IT in the 21st century. Chief among these factors is software as a service (SaaS (News - Alert)).

"With the collapse of the ASP model nearly six years ago, SaaS is picking up steam as a viable solution for organizations burdened with complex software infrastructures and limited resources," the whitepaper notes.

Featuring an in-depth look at SaaS, the whitepaper also provides a look at the results of a commissioned questionnaire and responses to interviews with 3 enterprise executives whose companies use Oracle On Demand service to uncover factors in IT excellence.

Oracle On Demand features value-added services, processes, infrastructure and expertise needed for business success.

Key to IT success, the whitepaper notes, are 3 factors: improved business alignment, so the goals of the IT department more closely match with those of the overall business; discovery of best practices that make processes and tasks easier and more efficient by combing together software and services; and good governance of IT, so that actions and goals are implemented and carried out successfully.

"The convergence of software and services has helped many enterprises to lower TCO and increase business value. Oracle On Demand Services can relieve IT organization from the time-consuming, resource-intensive challenges of change management, system patching and maintenance and allow them to focus more resources on new initiatives that deliver enhanced business value," commented Mike Beck, senior vice president of global operations for Oracle On Demand.
