VeriFone Wins Pay-At-The-Table Systems Order, Helps Fight Identity Theft
 TMCnet Assistant Editor
As credit card fraud has become one of the most common forms of identity theft today, there's no wonder a number of consumers are demanding enhanced security and increased paying options.
In the restaurant business, where credit cards are regularly used to pay for meals, findings are showing that high levels of fraud are occurring at the point of transaction, in a practice called "skimming", which involves the swiping of the customer's card through a special device that records the cardholders account information.
In a bid to respond to consumer demands and to reassure the thought of paying with ones credit card at restaurants, VeriFone Holdings Inc. offers ON THE SPOT, an at-the-table payment system exclusively designed for the hospitality industry.
They also offer a model designed exclusively for drive-thru windows.
The company has announced the winning of a multi-million dollar contract for the pay-at-the table system from Cara, a full service restaurant food chain in Canada.
The system is placed at the customer's table, where they are able to remain holding onto their card during the entire payment process. The system includes security and encryption features that allow information to remain private, even as it travels over the restaurants WiFi network.
With the services, Cara will benefit from more efficient operations and customers who feel more secure about transactions occurring at their restaurants.
Douglas G. Bergeron, chairman and CEO of VeriFone commented, "Full service restaurants in North America were once early adopters of credit card payment, but have been slow to respond to changing consumer needs for enhanced security and increased payment options. VeriFone has developed a suite of products specifically for restaurants operators to meet those needs."
