Sun Microsystems said today that it’ll provide technology platform to NBC Universal (News - Alert) for its Olympic Web site during the network’s coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The same announcement was made by Perkins Miller, a senior vice president at NBC Sports as by Peter Ryan, a Sun Microsystems (News - Alert) executive vice president.

Ryan said, “Sun has worked hard to architect a powerful, energy efficient platform for NBCOlympics.com that will rapidly scale for hundreds of millions of sports fans who look to the internet for the latest events and results. Miller added that “In 2008, NBCOlympics.com is redefining the Olympics experience and Sun Microsystems has been an important partner in that effort. We have recognized the growing online viewership for the Olympics and have worked with Sun to create a powerful and feature-rich Web experience for NBCOlympics.com.”

The online coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics by NBC will set a new standard in providing digital content to viewers, company officials say.

Unique features such as live streaming of events, video archives of completed events, blogs, live chat and athlete profiles. will also be present. Access to 2,200 hours total hours of live streaming Olympic broadband video coverage of 25 different sports will be available on the Web site.

The site will be supported by 160 Sun Fire x4450 and Sun Fire x4150 servers, according to the company. World-class performance, high compute density and storage with compact footprints and leading energy efficiency are the main features of these Intel (News - Alert) Xeon processor-based servers. Sun Services will also be providing installation, engineering expertise and support to NBCOlympics.com during the games.

NBC owns the exclusive U.S. media rights to the Olympic Games through 2012 which includes Beijing in 2008, Vancouver in 2010 and London in 2012, company officials say. NBC Universal will present 3,600 hours of coverage from August 8 to August 24. This will be highlighted by NBC in primetime with live swimming, gymnastics and beach volleyball. NBC intends to merge news, results and schedules with extensive video coverage and unique story telling content. The Web site will also offer on-demand access to full-event replays and extensive highlights.
