Cinterion Wireless Modules, Astrata Ink Multi-Year Contract
 TMCnet Contributing Editor
Cinterion Wireless Modules GmbH reportedly has inked a multi-year deal with the Astrata Group to supply GSM communication modules for Astrata’s new, advanced telematics unit – the GLP100i.
Astrata will purchase approximately 200,000 units in 2008, according to company sources.
A compact and technologically advanced telematics device, Astrata’s GLP100i is designed to meet the rigorous demands of fleet management and homeland security applications. With what company officials call a “unique built-in geofence feature” that auto-triggers an alert to the control center when the device enters or exits a pre-defined area, GLP100i is ideal for theft protection and real-time fleet tracking.
By enabling real time communications between GLP100i and an enterprise or government command center, the Cinterion GSM module allows simultaneous decision-making and immediate response. Cinterion officials say that by leveraging their compact quad-band GSM module, Astrata can deploy systems in any GSM market worldwide and reduce the size of the GLP100i device.
Tony Harrison, Astrata Group’s executive chairman, said that his company chose Cinterion as their communications technology partner as they are the established global leader in the design and manufacturing of GSM wireless communication modules.
Harrison said that Cinterion not only offers the company localized engineering support in nations around the world. He added that its modules are the most advanced, robust and reliable and certified in more natoins than competing GSM modules.
Cinterion greatly values the relationship with Astrata, as officials there see that their innovative and robust solutions are very well positioned in the sweet-spot of the market they are targeting, according to Norbert Muhrer, chief of Cinterion.
Both Astrata and Cinterion have worked together for several years to design and manufacture sophisticated telematics products building from Cinterion’s product road map which fits well with Astrata’s upcoming next-generation products.
