Report: California Realtors Rely on Technology
 TMCnet Contributing Editor
The top business uses of the Internet for realtors include e-mail, checking online listings, MLS access, access to brokerage Web sites, and access to WINForms electronic forms software, according to a new survey.
The “2008 Use of Technology Survey,” conducted by California Association of Realtors, tracks current trends in technology used by its members.
According to association President William E. Brown, pictured below, the Internet has become a crucial tool for realtors, most of whom have a high-speed connection in their homes.
“Realtors are doing more than ever on the Internet – marketing, maintaining their Web sites, posting their listings, and communicating with clients,” Brown said. “As a result, they are generating more business from the Internet than ever before.”
According to the survey, realtors are choosing high-tech tools such as handheld Internet devices, e-mail, and Web sites to communicate with their clients. About 22 percent of realtors respond to clients with the help of a handheld wireless Internet device, according to the survey – while 32 percent say they answer clients’ e-mails instantly and another 34 percent said they did so within 30 minutes to one hour.
According to the association “accessibility” is the new realtors’ mantra. Realtors now make themselves easily accessible through technologies such as Web sites.
The survey says that more than three-quarters (77 percent) of realtors who have personal Web sites include an Internet Data Exchange feed to display listings – an “IDX” is a real estate property search site which allows the public to conduct searches of approved Multiple Listing Service properties in a certain area.
The survey also said that 33 percent use a laptop or tablet computer in the field. For 27 percent of the realtors, a hands-free cell phone was their most important business upgrade in the last 12 months. Sixty percent pay for upgraded listings on Realtor.com, up from 48 percent in 2007, and 48 percent of realtors now say their business originated from the Internet.
