Google (News - Alert) is offering what it is called the "first global online science competition." It has been named the Google Science Fair.

It is open to students who are from ages 13 through 18. Access to a computer, the Internet and a Web browser are the requirements.
Participants build their project, on their own or with a group of up to three participants, according to a Google blog posting by Cristin Frodella and Samantha Peter, education product marketing managers at Google.

The projects are built and submitted online. Winners will be awarded prizes, such as a trip to the Galapagos Islands (with a National Geographic Explorer,) scholarships and work options. Rules are posted online.
Registration is open through April 4. Students need to get the consent of a parent or guardian to enter the competition. Judging starts after April 4.
The semi-finalists will be announced in May. The semi-finalists will have their projects posted on a Google site. The general public will select a winner.
Then, 15 finalists will be chosen. They will bring their projects to the Google headquarters on July 11. Judges will choose a winner for each age group, and select a grand-prize winner.
Entrants can submit projects in any of these categories:
  • Physics
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Food Science
  • Electricity & Electronics
  • Computer Science & Math
  • Earth & Environmental Sciences
  • Behavioral & Social Sciences
