SMC Networks Achieves MEF Certification for New Cable Modem Gateway
IRVINE, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- SMC Networks (www.smc.com) today announced that its SMC8014-TES Cable Modem Gateway has received MEF certification. Through the MEF Certification Program, testing performed by Iometrix, the designated tester for MEF, determined that SMC Networks' cable modem complies with MEF 9 EPL and EVPL and with MEF 14 EPL and EVPL. The SMC8014-TES DOCSIS 2.0 L2TPv3 Cable Modem Gateway is one of only two cable modem products currently certified as MEF-compliant.
MEF is a nonprofit organization that is attempting to accelerate adoption of carrier-class Ethernet. Its members include telecommunications service providers, network equipment/software manufacturers, semiconductors vendors and testing organizations.
"We are pleased to see the successful certification of SMC Networks's SMC8014-TES at a time when Ethernet over DOCSIS is poised to significantly expand Carrier Ethernet service offerings in an already rapidly growing marketplace," said Bob Mandeville, President of Iometrix, MEF's authorized certification lab.
"We're thrilled to be part of the MEF family," said Todd Babic, SMC Networks Vice President of Sales, Broadband Business Development for North America. "MEF Certification is a wonderful accomplishment, and a testament to SMC's commitment to meeting market needs. Our valued customers, whom we actively consulted in the SMC8014-TES design, will be as excited as we are with this accreditation. In a single device, a cable modem gateway, we have delivered an end point that is as reliable and feature-rich as it is affordable and scalable."
The SMC8014-TES is a standards-based solution, giving MSOs the needed flexibility to support multi-vendor L2TPv3-compliant enterprise concentrators. This commercial-focused gateway supports multiple VPN scenarios, including branch offices, teleworkers, cellular backhauls, SOHO/Peer-to-peer mesh networks, and enterprises where the SMC8014-TES is installed at multiple sites and connect to a hosted VPN concentrator, enabling MSOs to deliver Ethernet over DOCSIS services to their business customers. SMC has joined the Metro Ethernet Forum and will deliver high-reliability solutions that meet all applicable standards, while adding enhanced capabilities to help the MSO differentiate their service offering and compete effectively. The MEF-Certified SMC8014-TES is available now to cable providers and MSOs through the SMC Networks Broadband Development Group.
