New Combo: SIPquests IMS Client With Nortels Multimedia Services

BY JOHANNE TORRES

This week in Ontario, Canada, SIP developer SIPquest announced that is currently working with Nortel to provide an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) Client in support of Nortel’s Converged Multimedia Services (CMS) Solution. The SIPquest IMS client will be used bundled with the Multimedia Communication Server 5200 Application Server in ongoing Nortel CMS customer trials and initial CMS deployments.

The SIPquest IMS client software will provide client-side call control, personalization options and presence information across most devices, networks and media types. As a member of the Nortel Converged Multimedia Service Ecosystem, a multi-vendor convergence network partners, the SIPquest client would enhance service providers’ ability to realize new service and revenue opportunities with value-rich, multimedia services, claim both companies.

"The SIPquest IMS Client is the latest realization of SIPquest’s Converged Multimedia Client strategy," said David Hattey, SIPquest CEO. "SIPquest Converged Multimedia Clients enable service providers to offer fully-branded multimedia services over 2.5G and now, 3G networks. When optimized for a world-class solution like the Nortel CMS, the SIPquest IMS Client allows service providers to fully leverage the power of their network and quickly seize new revenues arising from convergence-related market disruption."

"Rich, intuitive client software is an essential element of our Converged Multimedia Service Solution strategy to help service providers attract new subscribers and generate new revenues through flexible bundles of multimedia services that can be accessed from any network connection and device," said Alan Stoddard, general manager, Converged Networks, Nortel. "Today’s announcement extends Nortel and SIPquest’s successful working relationship."

The Nortel CMS system is comprised of a product portfolio including the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), Multimedia Domain (MMD) and PacketCable standards-compliant networking products, complemented by a multi-vendor convergence ecosystem of best-in-class technology partners. Nortel explained that its CMS system is designed to allow service providers to offer multimedia services to virtually any end-user device across any access network.

SIPquest’s IMS Client manages IP multimedia sessions over IMS packet switched networks. It is based on IETF SIP with extensions for 3GPP and 3GPP2 and features a graphical user interface that allows the end-user to access capabilities such as presence, instant messaging (IM), click-to-call, address book, and advanced calling features. It supports multiple client environments including Symbian, Windows Mobile, and RIM.
