Cloud Communications Expo Focuses on Migration Using Mobile, Multimedia Technologies

By Stefanie Mosca, TMCnet Managing Editor

Yesterday, on the first day of the Cloud Communications Expo, discussions generated by the three panel discussions encompassed building the basis for a solid unified communications experience in the cloud, thanks to panelists from service providers, manufacturers and other areas of the telecom market.

The content of today’s sessions are building on the basis of UC in the cloud that was introduced yesterday while integrating the advanced cloud-based technologies that are driving our workforce today, including multimedia communications and mobility.

Following this morning’s ITEXPO keynote addresses with ShoreTel’s Peter Blackmore and IBM’s (News - Alert) Michael Riegel, the Cloud Communications Expo began with a session detailing the best practices and strategies for migration and managing your mobile workforce.

Panelists included Jim Machi from Dialogic, John Gentry of Virtual Instruments, Internap’s Peter Mastin and Andy Asava from GENBAND (News - Alert).

Moving further into the best approaches for making the switch to delivering rich multimedia communications in the cloud, the next session moderated by Embrase’s Larry Lisser (News - Alert) showcased another impressive group of panelists such as Todd Carothers from CounterPath, Sean Burke of Telovations and IntelePeer’s Charles Studt.

One topic that helped to lead the discussion included the transition from legacy PBX (News - Alert) systems to systems that are compatible with mobile-based communications to enable a truly virtual workforce no matter an employee’s location.

With mobility changing the enterprise workforce as we know it, Carother’s mentioned he can’t remember the last time he used his desktop phone.

And while that was not the case for Burke and Studt, they agreed that mobility is certainly the direction the enterprise is moving.

Burke added that there are things you can do with the cloud that you can’t do with premises-based communications, especially with the level of customization organizations require with their devices today. You can pull things with these communications that you can like never before. As a provider, you have to be able to hit all of the points on the check list while still providing additional features that add value and help you to stand apart in today’s competitive marketplace.

Currently in its second day, the Cloud Communications Expo, collocated with ITEXPO Austin 2012, will continue into tomorrow with a number of informative and engaging sessions regarding cloud-based communication technologies and how they are changing and driving the enterprise today.
