Comings & Goings: Tech Execs on the Move

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Contributor

It was a relatively quiet week for tech executive movement, but there were a few notable comings and goings that made headlines this week. Let’s take a look at the top tech exec moves this week.

The tech industry doesn’t take kindly to anti-gay sentiment, at least if the furor around the Mozilla (News - Alert) foundation in the past few weeks is any indication. Since the announcement on March 24 that Brendan Eich would be the CEO of the company, which oversees the Firefox web browser, there’s been much controversy surrounding a $1,000 donation made in his name to California’s proposition 8 campaign in 2008. This was largely seen as an anti-gay rights move, and there were calls for Eich’s ouster.

Among those who cried foul at the appointment were Mozilla board members Gary Kovacs (News - Alert), John Lilly and Ellen Siminoff, all of whom resigned from the board after the appointment.

The company has quickly replaced Eich with an interim CEO in the form of former Mozilla chief marketing officer Chris Beard. Beard will be in charge until a long-term replacement is found. He has been with the company for many years, and oversaw the release of Firefox for Apple’s (News - Alert) iOS and Google’s Android operating system.

You can learn more about the appointment in our report.

This week mobile payment services provider, Square, also added Alyssa Henry to its engineering team. An Amazon veteran, Henry was vice president for the company’s Amazon Web Services (News - Alert) (AWS) Storage System before joining Square.

The Square Reader is the primary device made by the company. It is a portable box that plugs into the audio jack of a smartphone or tablet and can accept mobile payments from major credit cards.

Telecom veteran Joe Schiavone joined Voxox this week, the cloud communications application developer. Schiavone, who brings 28 years of experience in the telecom sector, much of it with channel sales, is the new national channel manager for Voxox.

“We are committed to driving growth through the channel and providing a mutually beneficial program for our valued channel partners," Bryan Hertz, CEO of Voxox, said in a statement. "We welcome Joe's knowledge and experience in distribution channel development, and are looking forward to his contributions to our team and the partner network.”

Finally, this week Scott Nelson, PhD, CTO and EVP of enterprise growth of Logic PD, was recently appointed to Multi-Tech (News - Alert) Systems’ advisory board.

The machine-to-machine (M2M) products and services offered up by Multi-Tech Systems power applications for transportation, energy, healthcare, financial, retail and remote monitoring areas to help reduce costs, time and inefficiencies, according to the company.

Nelson has more than 25 years of experience leading technology and product development, having worked at Honeywell for 12 years in various research and leadership positions.

You can learn more about Multi-Tech and its direction, as well as what the appointment of Nelson to the board will mean for the company, in our report.
