Alberto Mordoki on Technological Advancements in Contracting/Home Renovation

There is no denying that technology has completely reshaped the construction industry. Contractors have quickly taken notice of the technological advancements in their field and learned that not only are these new technologies convenient and efficient, they are also necessary if they wish to remain competitive in their field.

Alberto Mordoki is a contractor and entrepreneur from Fullerton, California. He has been in the business for several decades and has seen the rise of these technological advancements firsthand. He provides his insight into the top three most important changes that have come about in the contracting/home renovation industry thanks to technology.

Construction Software

Technology is now an essential part of all industries and that includes the construction industry. In recent years, construction productivity software has become the norm for most contractors, shares Alberto Mordoki. Such technology helps contractors deal with short timelines and a rise in demand, which ultimately leads to more projects and thus more sales for manufacturers and distributors.

Overall, technologies make the jobs of contractors more efficient by improving productivity and making it easier to coordinate with all those involved in the supply chain (manufacturers, builders, retailers, contractors, and distributors). One example of construction software that many contractors use is PlanGrid. This is an iPad app that helps builders or architects draw notes, scribbles, or drawings on digital design plans. The success of PlanGrid has been well-documented, as the app reported that it has been used on over one million commercial construction projects around the world. Hyphen Solutions is another software company that is getting into the construction game. Through their software, they have created a way for contractors and builders to simplify complex processes like scheduling, purchasing, installation, and verification.

Offsite Construction

Offsite construction is another trend in contracting and home renovation brought about by technological advancements. Offsite construction is typically utilized on projects with repetitive layouts or floor plans, such as apartment or condo buildings, dormitories, hospitals, or hotels. Similar to an automobile manufacturing plant, offsite construction is done in a controlled environment where each worker is at a station and performing the same task all day, whether it be installing electrical wiring or constructing a wall frame.

Alberto Mordoki shares that offsite construction usually falls into one of two categories, modular or prefabricated. In modular offsite construction, entire rooms are built offsite, with finishes, fixtures, and everything, whereas in prefabricated construction, the separate building components are constructed off site but then are transported to the actual location and installed there.

Alberto Mordoki on Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning have made a huge difference in contracting/home renovations. Thanks to AI, construction firms are able to make more informed decisions, reduce risk, and increase safety and productivity, shares Alberto Mordoki. First, AI and machine learning can increase productivity by making it easier to locate certain materials, tools, or equipment on a job site, because everything is tracked through sensors. Further, AI can help measure the progress of a specific project thanks to rovers and drones, which can fly and roam about, photographing and capturing data on the job site. These scans can then be used to monitor progress and provide an estimated finishing date, as well as create 3D models and drawings of the project.
