Wireless phone manufacturer Ascalade Communications Inc. announced on Monday that it signed a development agreement with VoIP service provider Skype Technologies S.A. in order to develop multiple Skype-certified telecommunication products including wireless VoIP phones. Terms of the partnership were not disclosed at press time.

"We are very excited to announce our partnership with Skype," said Edmund Ho, president and CEO of Ascalade. "Our involvement with Skype signifies our commitment to the development of products in new and growing market segments. With the exponential growth in the number of Skype users, Ascalade is looking to meet a growing demand for innovative Skype products, such as our Companion Series of VoIP phones and next-generation Skype products that are currently under development."

The first multi-product deal device has already begun shipping to a major global networking company and is available in North America and Europe. It is part of Ascalade's Companion series of PC-based VoIP cordless phones. The device allows users access to their Skype contact lists, make Skype calls, change their online presence and access voicemail away from their PC. The phone features a color screen, speakerphone, polyphonic ring tones, and caller line identification and uses Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) technology. DECT enables uses a digital cordless technology that does not interfere with 2.4GHz devices in the home and office.
"Skype is more than just a company or software phenomenon - there's an entire ecosystem of important companies building products around it," said James Bilefield, vice president of business development of Skype. "Collaborating on development with leading designers like Ascalade will continue to be critical to the success of our business as the Internet communication market grows and matures."
Skype made news last week when audio guru Sennheiser Electronic Corporation (SEC), the U.S. subsidiary of its German parent company, released an announcement about teaming up with the VoIP service provider. Under the agreement, Skype will certify Sennheiser's suite of communications headsets and will sell a selection of them on its online store.
"Skype is helping to form the future of web communications, and as such is an ideal partner for Sennheiser," noted Andreas Bach, general manager sales and marketing at Sennheiser (Denmark), where the headset range is engineered. "We already know that our designs set the world standard, and it's gratifying to be similarly recognized by such an important innovator in our field."
