Dutch telecommunications watchdog fines three companies euro60,000 for e-mail spamming

The Associated Press

The Dutch telecommunications watchdog on Thursday said it had issued euro60,000, or nearly US$71,500, in fines to three companies for sending unsolicited e-mail, or spam.

The Dutch companies Speko, Van Leerdam's and Zmart sent e-mails advertising credit services and office supplies to an unknown number of people without their consent.

Speko was fined euro17,500, or US$20,853, for sending the ads and another euro5,000, or US$5,958, for failing to cooperate with investigators. Van Leerdam's was fined euro27,500, or US$32,769, for two spam mailings and Zmart was ordered to pay euro10,000, US$11,916.

Spam was banned in the Netherlands in May 2004 after going unpunished for years.

The regulator, known by its Dutch acronym OPTA, has received 14,000 complaints about spam since the law took effect.
