Narus and Shanghai to Block Unauthorized VoIP Calls in China

TMCnet Contributing Editor
Mountain View, Calif.-based Narus Inc. announced on Wednesday that it scored a new contract from Chinese telecom giant Shanghai Telecom Co. Ltd. Through the use of the company's new NarusInsight IP traffic processing system, Shanghai Telecom will be able to detect "unauthorized" VoIP call traffic. The system will also enable Shanghai to mitigate rogue VoIP traffic on their network and enhance the quality of service (QoS) for the users of properly configured and authorized VoIP services.

NarusInsight's will allow Shanghai to benefit from deep-packet inspection (layers 2 through 7) of its IP-based traffic while correlating across every link of the network at high speeds. This total network view is key to the security, management and deployment of Shanghai's IMS-based services such as VoIP, IPTV (News - Alert) and PTT. This is Narus' first installation in the Asian country. The move follows an agreement with the China Information Technology Security Certification Center (CNITSEC), which recently certified NarusInsight to protect some of China's telecom carriers against network attacks.

Designed in conjunction with a mitigation system from local Chinese partner and system integration from CommVerge Solutions, the Shanghai Telecom system leverages NarusInsight's VoIP Discovery application module to detect and analyze incoming VoIP traffic to correctly determine whether that traffic is authorized or not. If the VoIP traffic proves to be unauthorized, NarusInsight alerts the mitigation system to take action and block the traffic.
"Narus is the worldwide leader in providing the real-time network insight essential in securing, managing and delivering services over IP," said Dr. Weiming Li, vice president and general manager, Narus Asia/Pacific region in a statement. "By deploying NarusInsight, Shanghai Telecom not only has the critical VoIP detection and management capabilities required today, but also the ability to easily expand their system to provide the security, management and intercept capabilities required by all of their IP services as their portfolio grows."
NarusInsight provides carriers with a view of all the IP traffic on their network, supporting early detection of anomalies and threats, while also classifying real-time IP services such as VoIP and Skype (News - Alert) for management and QoS applications. The system correlates traffic across all the links and elements on the entire network.
Narus made news back in February when it announced that it entered into a partnership with Carahsoft Technology Corp., a government-focused info technology provider. The agreement called for Narus to provide Carahsoft with a higher performance IP security, monitoring and traffic classification system for Carahsoft to distribute it to government agencies on the GSA schedule.
Carahsoft specializes in providing government agencies with the ability to purchase and deploy up-and-coming technologies. "This partnership establishes Narus' participation in the GSA Schedule Program, through which more than 10 million commercial supplies and services can be ordered directly from GSA Schedule contractors," noted the companies' news release.
