On the heels of launching its nationwide100 Gbps network in October 2012, XO Communications (News - Alert) announced major enhancements to its Ethernet services.

XO is regarded as a pioneer in providing businesses with cost-effective alternative Ethernet access options to fiber optic technology.

'Today's announcement, along with our launch of our nationwide 100 Gbps network last month, demonstrates XO Communications' Ethernet services leadership in terms of the broad range of bandwidth options we offer and our commitment to making Ethernet more widely available," noted Don MacNeil, chief marketing officer at XO Communications.

The nationwide provider of advanced IP communications, hosted and managed network services stated that it had increased its Ethernet access speeds to100 Mbps Ethernet over copper (EoC), and expanded its nationwide Ethernet access network to nearly two million business locations.

This expanded EoC coverage, coupled with XO's extensive Ethernet Network-to-Network Interface (NNI) agreements with dozens of carriers and cable companies, gives the provider the exclusive status of having one of the most extensive Ethernet access networks in the industry.

EoC technology helps XO Communications to utilize the existing last mile copper infrastructure to deliver Ethernet access from 3 Mbps to now up to 100 Mbps. This means customers see more bandwidth at a more economical cost compared to other access options.

One of the first service providers to deploy EoC technology on a nationwide basis, XO
Communications has plans to further extend coverage and also increase Ethernet access speeds into the future.

'As demand for Ethernet continues to accelerate, XO Communications is very well positioned to deliver cost effective, scalable, high-speed Ethernet access options coupled with extensive nationwide coverage,' noted MacNeil, commenting on XO's capabilities.

XO Communications has also implemented the maiden coast-to-coast100Gbps network with assistance from Equinix (News - Alert) Inc. The firm has advantageously utilized Equinix International Business Exchange data centers across the United States for the delivery of 100G services.
