Acme Packet Intros Features, Announces Partnership

Session border control provider Acme Packet announced on Tuesday that it introduced additional features and a partnership to offer a suite of session border controller capabilities to enable cable voice, video and multimedia services.

The company now supports an ENUM server interface and has interoperability in field deployments with Nominum's Navitas, an ENUM-based IP-application routing directory server. Acme Packet is also expanding its hosted NAT traversal mechanisms with support for the IETF standard STUN (Simple Traversal of UDP through NATs), STUN-Relay/TURN (Traversal Using Relay NAT) and ICE (Interactive Connectivity Establishment).

Acme Packet is currently in commercial production at 4 cable operators in the U.S. and at some cable companies in Europe. For these operators, Acme Packet's Net-Net session border controllers provide access to the network edge and interconnect borders to protect and secure the MSO service infrastructure.

"With over 2.2 million cable VoIP subscribers in the United States supported by our Net-Net SBCs today, Acme Packet is taking a leading role in helping MSOs deliver next generation services," noted Seamus Hourihan, vice president marketing and product management at Acme Packet in a statement. "With the addition of the ENUM interface, our new partnership with Nominum, and STUN, STUN-Relay/TURN and ICE for NAT traversal, our Net-Net SBC delivers superior feature sets for both access and peering."

Acme Packet's ENUM server interface for the Net-Net SBC platforms supports private and public ENUM directory services and enables MSOs to use IP transport end-to-end for VoIP calls between subscribers on different networks. This eliminates any PSTN transport.

"Acme Packet and Nominum together enable secure, resilient and scalable ENUM directory services for cable operators and other service providers," said Tom Tovar, VP of Worldwide Sales and Business Development, Nominum. "Our proven interoperability and joint solution work is designed to speed the time to market for ENUM deployments and deliver what MSOs are demanding today."

The session border control provider made news last month when it announced that Fibernet Group's new VoIP interconnect service, IP gateway for London Carrier Ring (The ipLCR), is powered by its Net-Net session border controllers (SBCs).

The new service was launched as an extension to Fibernet's London Carrier Ring (LCR). The service is currently beta testing with Telstra, Thus, Lebara, iBasis and Gamma Telecom and will be in commercial production until the second quarter of 2006.

Fibernet's Carrier Rings host around 110 international operators. The new ipLCR service will provide TDM (SS7) to SIP or SIP to SIP, H.323 to H.323, and interworking between SIP and H.323 networks. The ipLCR is aimed at Fibernet's existing service provider customer base and newcomers to the VoIP market.
