Alcatel Inks Networking Deal with Dutch Ministry

French technology provider Alcatel announced today that it inked a contract with the Mobile Services Department (DMD) of the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations to deliver the "Manager of Managers" system (MoM). The system will enable DMD to manage the national safety and security communication system (C2000), which is based on the European mobile TETRA standard. The MoM-system is expected to be operational in the last quarter of 2006.

The current C2000 network has 450 antenna posts interconnecting around 70,000 pagers and walkie-talkies carried by emergency services personnel. In addition, 28 emergency rooms and security offices, customs offices and the Explosive Ordinance Disposal of the Royal Dutch Army are linked to the same system.

Alcatel's network management system is built on the Netcool suite of software from Micromuse, an IBM (News - Alert) subsidiary. The system is comprised of event management and reporting systems combining application components that enable auto-discovery of network topology. The company sets rules for intelligent filtering and correlation of large amounts of alarms so that the network management center operator can intervene in real-time.

"We have been looking for an intelligent solution to help us manage the huge amounts of control messages which come in on a daily basis. After an extensive and exhaustive search, we have found in Alcatel (News - Alert) the solution to do just that," says Peter Rosenkrantz, director of the Mobile services Department (DMD) in a statement. "Alcatel is an expert in complex communications network integration with a proven track record, and we are more than confident that we have found in them the perfect partner for the job."

Alcatel made news last month when it announced it scored two contracts from Shanxi Mobile Communication Company Limited (Shanxi MCC) in China to expand the operator's GSM network. The new contract is valued at Euro 24 million (U.S. 29 million). The contracts were won through Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel's flagship Chinese company.

The network expansion contract called for Alcatel to provide and install its Evolium GSM/EDGE systems including Base Stations (BTS), Base Station Controllers (BSC), Transcoder (TC), Multi-BSS Fast Packet Server (MFS) supporting the Packet Control Unit (PCU) functions, and Operation & Maintenance Center for Radio (OMC-R), in seven major cities in Shanxi province, namely Yuncheng, Luliang, Linfeng, Jincheng, Changzhi, Xinzhou and Jinzhong.
