AT&T Government Solutions announced on Tuesday that it was selected by the Internal Revenue Service to provide a Cisco-based IP Telephony system for packetized voice communications at 52 IRS locations throughout the US.

The new contract calls for AT&T (News - Alert) Government Solutions to provide the agency with a set of products and services comprised of site survey, wire plant upgrade, IP telephony platform, engineering services, program management and training.

"IP telephony has helped federal agencies reduce their costs, achieve greater efficiencies and increase their productivity through converged communications architecture," said Don Herring, president of AT&T Government Solutions in a statement. "AT&T Government Solutions is delighted to help the IRS use IP telephony to meet its business and technological challenges.

AT&T Government Solutions also manages the IRS Enterprise Remote Access Project (ERAP), which supports its telework program. AT&T recently designed and implemented the ERAP for the IRS based on an AT&T virtual private network. The ERAP program provides IRS offices and audit sites with connectivity to applications and resources located at IRS data centers. More than 26,000 IRS employees use the ERAP for remote data communications.

Today's news follows AT&T's announcement yesterday about it being selected to offer voice and data services to Cambridge, Mass.-based imaging products provider Charrette. The network hooked up the company's 400 employees who work in numerous locations around the nation. The new, three-year contract extended AT&T's long-standing relationship with Charrette.

The new contract called for AT&T to converge Charrette's voice and data onto a single Enhanced Virtual Private Network (EVPN). Using Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology, AT&T's network integrated the company's 18 corporate locations under a single IP-based architecture.
