AT&T announced Thursday that it inked a two-year networking contract with Australia-based First Data International to provide a new MPLS-based virtual private network (VPN) in Southeast Asia.

The new network will connect First Data's offices in Sydney, Hong Kong, and its newly opened Singapore locale. First Data provides a suite of electronic payment processing services comprised of Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) switching, device driving, credit card, and merchant account processing services.

"We were looking for a flexible, efficient solution that we could leverage with existing technology and would meet our existing and future requirements," said Brett Morelli, vice president of network services at First Data. "The AT&T (News - Alert) MPLS core provides us with a fast, triangular routing solution between our offices in Sydney and Singapore."

According to the companies' news release, the agreement announced today is the telecom giant's first local deal in Australia. Both companies also have a global networking agreement in the United States.

"We are excited about the opportunity to work with First Data here in Australia," said Jeyan Jeevaratnam, managing director of AT&T Australia/New Zealand in a statement. "We already have a long- term global agreement with them in the United States. This is the first collaborative opportunity we've had in this region, and we are certain that we have the experience and network reach to support and help First Data grow its business."

AT&T made news yesterday when it announced that it was chosen by EduNeering, a Deloitte Technology Fast 500 Company with multiple locations in the U.S. and the UK, to provide dedicated, redundant high-speed Internet circuits.

EduNeering delivers Internet-deployed training programs to corporate and government clients in the life sciences, healthcare, energy and industrial markets. EduNeering's customized training programs are delivered through the company's online data center which is now backed by AT&T's network of DS3 circuits. The circuits allow EduNeering to deliver high-bandwidth to its clients without the risk of service interruption.
