AT&T Scores $3.5 M Networking Contract from Orica

AT&T Inc. announced on Tuesday that it scored a $3.54 million, two-year networking contract from Orica Limited to integrate an Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IP VPN). Orica of Australia is a manufacturer in the mining, consumer products and chemical services market.

The new contract calls for AT&T (News - Alert) to deploy a global network that will incorporate the telecom giant's latest Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology, connecting 135 Orica sites across Australia, Asia Pacific, Europe, Canada, Latin America and the United States. The AT&T system will give Orica's global staff access to its ordering and fulfillment systems based in Melbourne, Australia. The system will support Orica's $10 million SAP (News - Alert) consolidation project.

"AT&T was selected ahead of several global competitors who were bidding for the contract because of the company's global reach and long-term experience in the delivery of IP based solutions," said David Vranes, of Orica's IT Shared Services in a statement. "The project will leverage AT&T's advanced customer management tools, including AT&T IP VPN."

Deployments like Orica's are increasing in popularity at a steadily rapid speed. Indeed, network-based IP VPN equipment revenue is poised to grow from $347 million in 2004 to a whopping $658 million in 2009 worldwide. These findings were recently published in a study titled The Equipment Options for Implementing Network-Based IP VPN Services, conducted by research firm In-Stat.

The VoIP Minute Watch reported on multiple IP VPN deployment deals during 2005. The deployments involved giant telecoms and communications companies such as AT&T, Verizon (News - Alert) and Avaya (News - Alert). Medical organizations, banking and other financial firms, as well as multi-campus educational institutions have all benefited from partnering with these telecom providers to integrate their voice and data services as they converged to an all-IP network.
