AT&T Inc. announced on Wednesday that it inked a three-year contract for networking security services from Lorillard Tobacco Co., one of the oldest and largest tobacco companies in the United States. Terms of the agreement were not released at press time.

The deal calls for AT&T to provide a network-based e-mail security and message management system that will enable Lorillard to ensure the integrity of electronic messaging before it enters the corporate network.

The AT&T will also shield Lorillard users from spam and viruses; manage their content; enforce their e-mail policy; archive their messages; and provide disaster recovery for both inbound and outbound messages. All the services will be delivered through a global network of data centers for redundancy and load balancing to maximize bandwidth and ensure always-available electronic messaging, storage and monitoring capabilities.

Additionally, the AT&T system provides an extra level of security with its Transport Layer Security (TLS), an emerging encryption technology standard that ensures server-to-server privacy over the Internet. Through an array of online tools, Lorillard can easily manage inbound and outbound messages in real time via a single point of access.

"E-mail has become such a vital tool for sharing key and confidential information internally and with vendors for our company," said Raymond Tatonetti, IT vice president of Lorillard Tobacco Co. "We are pleased to be working with AT&T on a reliable, scalable and economical solution that provides unsurpassed security for our electronic messaging needs."

AT&T made news yesterday when it announced a five-year optical and data-networking service contract with the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC). The new deal calls for AT&T to expand RIC's bandwidth by implementing a fully managed switched-optical Ethernet service to 14 RIC offices throughout Chicago. With additional bandwidth and redundancy, the medical facility will be able to transmit VoIP applications and data traffic among the organization's locations.

AT&T will also provide RIC with dedicated Internet access to digital high-speed connectivity that's always available. AT&T is the primary provider of voice and data services to RIC.
