Neophyte Hawaii mobile operator Coral Wireless selected Nortel as its infrastructure supplier for its PCS network, the companies announced today in a news release.

The agreement calls for Coral Wireless, which plans to launch the 50th state's first low-cost, unlimited-use wireless voice and data network in early 2006, to use Nortel's CDMA2000 1X wireless infrastructure.

In addition to providing an efficient network with high quality voice, Nortel's wireless infrastructure will support enhanced, high-speed data services like Web browsing, streaming audio and video, and multimedia messaging.

Coral Wireless CEO Bill Jarvis is touting his company as the "first and only company in Hawaii to offer a simple and affordable alternative to traditional wireless services."

Indeed, the wireless company's plan is to offer its subscribers unlimited local and long distance calling for under $50 per month.  Additional voice and data features will also be available to subscribers to customize a plan to suit their needs.

"[W]e selected Nortel as our infrastructure supplier because of their proven track record in CDMA technology and vast experience in deploying wireless broadband networks across the globe," Jarvis said, adding that "Coral Wireless is dedicated to bringing the most innovative communications services to Hawaii."

As for Nortel, today's announcement comes fresh on the heels of yesterday's big news that the company expanded its relationship with Microsoft to deliver real-time business communications.
