U.S. Marine Corps Taps TCS for Emergency CommunicationsTMCnet Contributing Editor E911 technology provider TeleCommunication Systems (TCS) announced it was chosen by U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific to provide a satellite-based, encrypted emergency communications network for back-up communications.
The new contract calls for TCS to install infrastructure, provision on-demand satellite services and stand up a SwiftLink 2310 remote network node. The TCS SwiftLink product suite is comprised of commercial modules and components used for strategic response situations. According to a TCS news release, the SwiftLink 2310 is a “portable C4I terminal that reaches back to centralized sources of information and personnel over global mobile satellite communication links.”
The terminal provides encrypted voice and data communications over the Inmarsat satellite network.
Under the contract, Marine Corps will incorporate TCS' SwiftLink as part of an overall Continuity of Operations Plan which requires communication contingency for U.S. Marine Corps command locations in the continental U.S. whenever primary voice and data networks are not available.
TCS recently made news when Lucent Technologies announced it agreed to globally distribute and resell the company's location-based systems and applications.
TCS's location-based systems allow service providers to offer their enterprise and residential customers a set of services such as “family finder,” which quickly locates and calls other family members. A business could easily coordinate package deliveries and pickups based on constantly updated knowledge of driver locations.
