david-scult.jpgToday, Fonality announced it has appointed former Microsoft Exec David Scult (image right) as Chief Executive Officer. This is the second CEO in just a couple years. Dean Mansfield replaced Chris Lyman CEO, the founder of Fonality. I'm a fan of Fonality's Asterisk-based products, especially their HUD client, so I'm hoping things are going well there. Who couldn't also be a fan of Chris Lyman and co-founder Samy Kamkar who found time to bring some levity to the Fonality team, such as this:

Ah, I miss the Chris Lyman days - he was such a character. He believed Fonality's version of Asterisk was vastly superior to native Asterisk and he made you believe it to. It made for some interesting Fonality vs. Digium battles! light-saber-battle I have an invitation to talk with new CEO David Scult, which I plan on accepting and then writing about Fonality's future plans.

In the meantime, according to Fonality, David is a tech industry veteran bringing more than 30 years of IT and software experience from enterprise and small business environments. Scult will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day-operations, as well as the strategic direction of Fonality’s product development and sales functions.

“David is a seasoned executive whose proven expertise with both large and small firms will be an incredible asset to support Fonality’s upward trajectory,” said Paul Weinstein, general partner, Azure Capital Partners and Fonality board member. “We look forward to benefitting from the talents he cultivated at industry icons like Microsoft that will help Fonality fulfill ambitious goals, such as global expansion and even stronger innovation. His vision and prowess as a thought leader in both the software and communications industry will also be primary drivers in growing our sales and channel operations.”

Prior to Fonality, Scult served as General Manager of Microsoft — Office 365, where he was responsible for global distribution of Microsoft Information Worker products in the cloud, including SharePoint, Exchange and Office. In addition to his role at Microsoft, he brings broad executive experience working with large enterprises to more entrepreneurial ventures and has consistently been at the forefront of innovation in business productivity. Responsibilities icluded president of Groove Networks, CEO of Radnet and managing director at Lotus Development Corp. (IBM).

“I am excited to be entrusted to lead a dynamic organization that is redefining the industry like Fonality,” said Scult. “Their agnostic platform which can deliver hosted, premise-based or hybrid-hosted solutions offers tremendous flexibility to the marketplace. As more and more companies begin to understand the value proposition presented by Unified Communications and contact center solutions, I have tremendous confidence that we are poised for explosive growth. I’m looking forward to working closely with the entire Fonality team to continue helping today’s small and mid-size businesses reduce costs and improve productivity with the communications tools that are right for them.”
