Fujitsu has set a new benchmark in mobile storage by launching the world’s first 300GB 2.5-inch mobile HDD.

Sunnyvale, Calif. based Fujitsu Computer Products of America, Inc., a leading manufacturer of computer hardware solutions, unveiled its groundbreaking MHX2300BT series of 2.5-inch mobile hard disk drives(HDDs) in a coordinated global launch on Monday. The launch follows the company’s March release of 200GB 2.5” Serial ATA (SATA).

The latest line boasts of industry leading capacities of 250GB and 300GB. The improved capacity has been achieved using perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology. The small form factor HDDs are expected to commence a new generation of high-capacity mobile devices.

Furthermore, the drives are at par with the best in the industry in terms of power efficiency (1.6W) and shock tolerance (300G (2ms)). The MHX2300BT series boasts of near-silent operation as well. These features make the HDDs ideal for audio/video (A/V) applications like gaming, video editing, audio recording, DVR functionality, and not to mention high-end personal computing.

Among the other valuable capabilities of the MHX2300BT series are rotational speed of 4200 RPM, SATA 2.5 and ATA-8 interface, idle power consumption of 0.5W, track-to-track seek time of 1.5ms and maximum host transfer rate of 150MB/s.

“Due to our strong focus on innovation, Fujitsu remains at the forefront in promoting advanced technologies such as perpendicular recording and SATA, while at the same time continuing to meet the industry’s insatiable demand for high-capacity products,” said Joel Hagberg, vice president, marketing and business development, Fujitsu Computer Products of America in a statement to the press.

“Our commitment to R&D has not only spurred the development of the industry’s first 2.5-inch 300GB capacity perpendicular hard disk drive, but it will allow Fujitsu to continue to achieve these aggressive milestones in advance of the rest of the industry.”

With Fujitsu hoping to sell up to 1.5 million units, the new HDDs will be ready for dispatch by early next year.
