IBM said Tuesday that it has acquired privately held DataPower, a developer of hardware designed to speed up and secure XML networks.

The acquisition will add to IBM’s SOA capabilities, including WebSphere software, SOA services and consulting, IBM said.

“With more companies taking a modular approach to running business processes through a Services Oriented Architecture, there’s a greater need for technology to deal with the commensurate increases in Web services traffic, which can overburden IT systems,” said Robert LeBlanc, general manager of WebSphere, IBM Software Group, in a prepared statement.

DataPower CEO Jim Ricotta will continue to manage DataPower, and the company’s employees will become IBM employees.

No layoffs have been announced and the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
