China Netcom, one of China’s largest communications services providers, has reportedly selected UTStarcom’s RollingStream end-to-end IPTV (News - Alert) solution for the delivery of IPTV services in the city of Harbin, northeast China.

According to a company press release, the Harbin contract follows an initial deployment of 100,000 concurrent media streams which cover a majority of the city. China Netcom’s service to that area includes 60 channels of live broadcast television with “time-shifting” capabilities, 48-hour TV-on-demand, and approximately 5,000 hours of video-on-demand. The service also reportedly offers added features including an on-line weather report, information browsing and searching services.

The deal with China Netcom represents UTStarcom’s fourth IPTV contract in China. It is reportedly the single largest IPTV capacity deployment in China to date.

“The Harbin contract shows that a typical business model and value chain for IPTV in China is emerging and that there are large market opportunities and consumer demand throughout many regions,” said Youssef Kassissia of UTStarcom in a press release. “UTStarcom continues to prove its position at the forefront of real-world IPTV deployments. We have the largest number of subscribers in China and we now have the experience, the expertise and the local presence in this region to make that knowledge count. IPTV is a fundamental part of our customers’ triple play service plans, both in initial deployments in Western Europe and in the fast growing networks of Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. UTStarcom’s carrier class, highly scalable RollingStream product will have broad appeal to both segments of this region.”
