Scalix Corporation has announced the commercial availability of Scalix 11, its CRM-compatible Linux-based e-mail, calendaring and messaging platform.

Previously available as a preview version, Scalix 11 is, company officials claim, a "field-tested, easy- to- administer system enabling deep integration with legacy environments."

It includes a Web services platform and mobile web client, enhanced management capabilities and ongoing improvements to Scalix's Web client and Outlook support.

Glenn Winokur, Scalix's CEO, called the product "an alternative to Microsoft (News - Alert) Exchange," one that "integrates with current mission-critical applications like CRM and ERP, provides the familiar Outlook desktop"

Among other features, Scalix 11 offers Scalix Web Access, described by company officials as an AJAX-based client with "usability and performance to replace existing desktop clients altogether. Scalix 11 improves SWA with server-side search, full folder sharing, delegation, out-of-office assistant, address auto-completion, mouseover and right click functionality, and faster performance."

Reviewing the product last year, industry observer George Ou noted that the Scalix Web Client was "so impressive that it even surpassed the Microsoft Exchange 2003 OWA client in terms of functionality and richness," and while it doesn't look as "pretty" as the OWA 2003 client" in terms of matching Outlook 2003’s appearance and animated GUI, it easily surpassed OWA 2003 in terms of functionality."

However, as Ou noted, "Implementing Scalix requires a Linux guru who has some experience with Tomcat application server and is comfortable with the command line interface. (Most of the serious configuration changes must be done with a command line interface.) Now, this may be perfectly fine with an organization that already possesses a Linux guru or is willing to hire one, but it’s completely alien to an Exchange shop"
