Sri Lankan army relaunches Web site

The Associated Press

Sri Lanka's military has redesigned its Web site to counter an online disinformation campaign by the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels, a top military officer said Friday at its launch.

The new-look Web site carries maps and graphics detailing incidents that the military blames on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka told reporters in Colombo.

"We are launching this upgraded Web site to challenge our adversaries who want to tarnish the military's image," Fonseka said.

The Tamil Tiger rebels, who began fighting in 1983 to carve out a separate homeland for the country's 3.2 million minority Tamils, have several Web sites of their own in English and Tamil language.

The Sri Lankan government and Tamil Tiger rebels resumed a peace process last month with talks in Geneva, Switzerland, as part of efforts to shore up a fragile 2002 cease-fire.
