Verizon Jumping the Gun?

Just how confident is Verizon Communications Inc. that its proposed merger with MCI, Inc. will receive federal regulatory approval?

Well, the telecommunications giant announced Thursday that John Killian has been named president-elect of the business unit that will combine MCI with Verizon’s Enterprise Solutions Group.

Verizon, of course, did the politically correct thing in its prepared statement, stating that “[t]he appointment is dependent on regulatory approval of the merger, anticipated by the end of 2005.”

Obviously the RBOC has to prepare for the merger’s approval by readying the troops and appropriate groups before it’s a done deal.  But announcing group heads prior to approval?  Hmmm.

Anyway, Killian is currently Verizon Domestic Telecom’s senior vice president and chief financial officer.  Prior to that position, he served as Verizon’s senior vice president and controller.

“We want to establish Verizon as a leading global solutions provider, and we have confidence that John Killian is the right person to lead this critical effort,” said Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg.
