Alcatel Enhances Quality of Triple-Play Offering

French technology provider Alcatel announced this week that it has made enhancements to its Triple-Play Service Delivery Architecture (TPSDA). The enhancements will accelerate IP network transformation and improve quality for broadband consumer services.

“Alcatel (News - Alert) has established an industry-leading blueprint for triple-play services and garnered TPSDA customers at a rapid pace,” said Alcatel’s president of IP activities Basil Alwan, in a statement. “With these new enhancements to Alcatel’s TPSDA, we are continuing to demonstrate our commitment to product and service innovation, enabling our customers to transform their broadband services portfolios.”

The Alcatel IP portfolio has been selected by service providers such as AT&T (News - Alert), BT, TeliaSonera and China Telecom. Alcatel announced new deals this week. SaskTel of Canada recently selected Alcatel’s triple-play system to enhance its Internet and entertainment services across Saskatchewan; a U.S.-based integrated communications provider, NTELOS will also deploy Alcatel’s TPSDA for a triple-play trial in Virginia; and U.S. independent service provider Brazoria Telephone will deploy an end-to-end IP network system to deliver new services to its customers in Texas.

New to Alcatel’s TPSDA are Release 4.0 of the Alcatel Service Router Operating System (SR OS) and Release 2.0 of the Alcatel 5750 Subscriber Services Controller (SSC). SR OS release 4.0, which are currently available.

These new additions include the Non-stop PIM (Protocol Independent Multicast)-based multicast routing and stateful IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) switchover for Non-stop broadcast TV service delivery; and the Non-stop network operation with in-service software upgrades.

The company will provide support for “any mode of operation” by increasing flexibility and accelerating network transformation for triple-play services. Alcatel will also release programmable subscriber configuration policies, with automated subscriber management to accelerate High Speed Internet (HSI) migration from PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) to DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), unifying and optimizing triple-play operations.

The company plans to release the 5750 SSC 2.0 in 3Q 2006. This system includes Support for Service Admission Control (SAC) as part of Alcatel's TPSDA service assurance and control framework for large scale, on-demand service delivery. The system integrates subscriber management for DHCP and RADIUS, enabling accelerated High Speed Internet (HSI) migration from PPP to DHCP, unifying and optimizing triple-play operations.

Alcatel made news last month when it announced it had signed an agreement to offer Syndesis’ carrier-grade suite as part of its Operation Support Systems (OSS) portfolio. Combined with Alcatel integration services, service providers will be able to launch services such as Triple/Quad-Play, IPTV (News - Alert) and VoIP.

The deal called for Alcatel to embed Syndesis’ IP Triple-Play service delivery management systems into its suite of next generation network offerings. The system would reduce the time associated with the installation of IP networks and the delivery of feature-rich IP-based video, voice and data services. By offering these systems, Alcatel offers connectivity and interoperability between platforms, enabling a lower-risk network evolution, rapid service introduction and network visibility for effective IP service management.
