Verso Technologies announced today that it has been selected by Startech Connections to deploy the Verso MetroNet VoIP Overlay system, including the I-Master prepaid platform, which will run over a WiMAX-based radio system, enabling services to both residential and business markets in Nigeria.

Startech Connections is a broadband-fixed wireless telecom operator based in Abuja, Nigeria, where the initial deployment will occur, with five additional regions to follow.

The MetroNet VoIP Overlay system can be deployed into a metropolitan market over any broadband medium including cable, xDSL, wireless, fiber, satellite, and microwave. The integrated VoIP system also includes the I-Master, a real-time authentication and rating engine that enables carriers to deploy the complex rating schemes required to secure new market opportunities, such as prepaid, as well as track and recover revenues.

The MetroNet VoIP Overlay combines various next generation Verso products into an integrated VoIP offering. The offering is comprised of the I-Master, as well as Clarent softswitches including the tandem (Class 4) and endpoint (Class 5) switching technologies combined with the BHG 2500 Universal Gateway, Border Agent, Voicemail and Web-based subscriber portals.

“The differentiating factor was the fact that this is an end-to-end VoIP solution that contains all technical aspects for installation, deployment and support,” said Startech Connections' managing director and chief executive officer Kim Fraser in a statement. “A complete offering allows us to streamline deployment and achieve significant cost savings, not to mention the advantages of a simple pricing and billing model that allows Startech Connections to generate new revenues and to quickly grow its subscriber base.”

Verso has been making strides in the VoIP industry in China as well. Indeed, thanks to a new partnership between Verso and China Netcom announced back in March, residences in rural China will now be able to receive telephone services. China Netcom chose Verso’s Clarent Class 5 softswitch to support a major VoIP deployment and provide basic telephony services to remote regions in the Asian country. The project is part of a major Chinese government initiative with China Netcom to improve the quality of life for rural Chinese by extending basic telephone service to outer territories.

“China has long been an important market for Verso, since telecom is one of the fastest growing sectors of China's economy,” said Monty Bannerman, chief executive officer, Verso Technologies. "With a broad range of applications, Verso is poised for new opportunities in the Chinese market, ranging from basic telephony services through our class 5 softswitch solution to next generation communications solutions.”
