The folks at Ericsson are determined to ensure that people have access to wireless voice and data services, regardless of where they are in the world.

Indeed, the Swedish infrastructure giant in June introduced GSM on Aircraft, which enables airline passengers to use wireless services while traveling on commercial flights.

Today, Ericsson and SeaMobile addressed the needs of the sea faring crowd with the announcement of the companies' three-year agreement to provide wireless services to cruise lines, ferries, yachts, container ships and the offshore oil and gas industry.

Using Ericsson's wireless network, SeaMobile will offer global wireless communications at sea through maritime satellite service providers.  According to the press statement, "radio base stations will be placed on ships, and communication will be secured through satellite links to the hosted network on shore."

"Consumers are used to taking their mobile phones wherever they go, and they want the option of being in touch at all times," said Angel Ruiz, head of Ericsson North America, in a prepared statement.  "Ericsson will help SeaMobile deliver that freedom to its customers, even at sea."
