News from India:

ISG NovaSoft, an enterprise application management and outsourced product development company, part of the $2 billion K. K. Birla group, has entered into a strategic alliance with SAP India to use the capabilities of SAP NetWeaver, mySAP ERP and mySAP Business Suite.

ISG NovaSoft focuses on discrete and continuous manufacturing companies in large and mid market segments.

The partnership comes at what ISGN officials call "an opportune time," when Indian companies are integrating into the world economy. With this partnership, they hope, ISGN will "intensify" its presence in the Indian market and "further strengthen its position in the above mentioned industry segments."

Noting that ISGN has been selling services around SAP products for the last eight years, Krishna Srinivasan, Chief Executive Officer, ISG NovaSoft says the company's looking for this alliance to enhance ISGN's position in the industry "as a service provider with deep domain expertise, which is the need of the Indian market today."

A piece on Wireless IQ a couple days ago noted that Trimax Corporation, through its wholly owned subsidiary, PLC Network Solutions, has signed an LOI with The BI Group of Companies, New Delhi, to install its Broadband over PowerLine devices and bundled services at two hotels and a major shopping mall owned by the company.

The move comes as the Indian government has finalized a policy to accelerate the growth of broadband connections to be at least 50 percent of all Internet subscriptions.

The hotels include the Holiday Inn, Agra, and The Hotel Marina, New Delhi, India. The Ansal Plaza shopping mall in Ludhiana is "the first of its kind in Punjab with major international brands," such as Nike, Reebok, Levis, Benetton, McDonald's and KFC.

The BI Group sees the move as enhancing its existing guest services, and likes Broadband over Powerline technology because of "its low cost, minimum disruption and feature rich applications," say company officials.

The product offers scalable symmetrical internet with upload and download speeds of 20-30 Mbps to accommodate services such as VoIP, Video on demand and IPTV which are all compatible with PLC's single platform plug-and-play BPL technology.

Renesas Technology Corp. and Wipro Technologies have announced that they've ported Wipro's AQUA, a Linux-based mobile phone reference framework, onto Renesas' SH-Mobile Series application processors for 2.5G and 3G mobile phones.

This is to enable mobile phone manufacturers to use a Linux product for SH-Mobile, in addition to tools for Symbian OS and iTRON. Renesas Technology will "propose a Linux solution based on AQUA from January 2006," according to company officials.

Both companies see Linux becoming widely adopted as an embedded OS in communication equipment such as network servers and network terminals. Many mobile phones incorporate real time operating systems due to features such as speed and modest memory use. However, it costs more to develop applications, thereby fueling the adoption of Linux.
