Verizon and Vonage in VoIP Infringement Brawl

TMCnet Contributing Editor

VoIP-based calling service provider Vonage Holdings Corp. was slammed on Monday with a lawsuit filed by Verizon Communications Inc. for alleged patent infringement. Specifically, the lawsuit from Verizon Service Corp. and Verizon Laboratories Inc. alleged that Vonage (News - Alert) had infringed on seven patents related to VoIP technology, reported the Associated Press.

On the other hand, Vonage Holdings Corp. made its own announcement about the alleged accusations today. The VoIP-based calling service provider noted in a statement that it had indeed been served with a patent infringement lawsuit, along with its wholly owned subsidiary, Vonage America, Inc., filed by Verizon Services Corp. and Verizon Laboratories, Inc. relating to VoIP technology.

"As a leading developer of VoIP technology, Vonage respects the valid intellectual property rights of others. Vonage believes that its services have been developed with its own proprietary technology and technology licensed from third parties and intends to vigorously defend the lawsuit. Vonage has not previously been notified by Verizon regarding the seven patents identified in the lawsuit and has engaged it's outside intellectual property counsel to investigate the matter." released Vonage in a statement on Monday.
