TMCnet Assistant Editor

This week SIP heats things up in the market with new offerings; shows promise for the future, and gets ready to exhibit at VoIP Developer.

A report released this week by Infonetics Research found that VoIP and Next generation voice services are taking over in a bid to play catch-up with the falling income from traditional phone services.

The research firm also found that SIP protocol has an important part in the process because if its ability to connect IP-based applications to one another and as a method of offering fixed mobile convergence. Respondents of their survey predicted the protocol to reach 100 percent penetration by 2007.

TMCnet's Mae Kowalke wrote, "In the course of its research, Infonetics found that equipment interoperability is cited as the top barrier to entry for carriers joining VoIP market. Carriers specifically expressed concern about the lack of industry consensus regarding definitions for IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) (IMS) architecture."

SIP is growing in demand in the Telecom market, a new Light Reading study found.  The study looked at the growing number of technology suppliers making their way into the SIP market as well as the future adoption rates for networks and enterprises.

Also this week, Convergin made news when they announced their Accolade Convergence Service Capabilities Interaction Management (SCIM) platform, which serves to extend legacy service toward IMS and into next generation services including wireless and wireline.

According to a report by TMCnet's Laura Stotler, "Operators may enable SIP across the existing SCP-based services and can also control access to those services from a number of switching platforms and service providers." Also, the platform can later be used to "enhance service offerings to permit SIP-based services and SIP/IMS application servers."

Now on to the 3rd Annual VoIP Developer Conference to be held at the Hyatt Regency in
Santa Clara, California August 8-10 where the VoIP development community will address and demonstrate the VoIP industry's hottest topics from the tools available on the market to the development of high-demand VoIP applications.

Eicon Networks, also a gold sponsor of the event, announced they would preview their Diva Server SIPcontrol product.

The way it works: "Voice channels are converted into IP packets and streamed via the RTP protocol into the vocalocity platform or to another SIP endpoint so that together, Diva Server Telephony boards and Diva Server SIPcontrol act as a IP/PSTN gateway and provides an open and standards-based approach that is compliant with MRCP an SIP architecture," Eicon told TMCnet.
